Explore the beauty of geometric pattern through drawing, design, and mosaic in this hands-on workshop with mosaic artist Shelley Beaumont! Beginning with only a compass, pencil, and a few simple measurements, students will learn how to construct three foundational sacred geometry patterns: the Seed of Life, the 12-Petaled Daisy, and the Flower of Life. We’ll explore how circles can be used to create balanced, repeating patterns and how small geometric decisions can develop into intricate and harmonious designs. Students will then translate their chosen geometric pattern into a 12-inch glass-and-gemstone mosaic mandala. Along the way, Shelley will introduce design considerations such as color, rhythm, repetition, material selection, and the practical decisions involved in building a mosaic from initial drawing through final grouting. No previous drawing or mosaic experience is required. The class is designed to be both instructional and meditative, giving students time to slow down, work carefully, and discover how precise geometry can become expressive artwork. Each student will leave with the knowledge and techniques to continue exploring circle-based geometric designs, as well as a completed 12-inch mosaic mandala. Sacred Geometry Drawing: How to construct the Seed of Life, 12-Petaled Daisy, and Flower of Life by hand using compass-based geometry.
Design Through Circle Geometry: How overlapping circles and geometric relationships can be used to develop balanced, repeating patterns and original designs.
Building a Mosaic Mandala: The key decisions and techniques involved in taking a geometric design from drawing through material selection, assembly, and grouting.
Students will need to provide or purchase their own glass and other mosaic materials for the project. Material needs and color choices will be discussed during class.
Students are welcome to continue working on their mandala outside of class if they would like additional time before the final grouting session. The amount of work to be completed outside of class will depend on each student's pace and project and will be discussed as needed during the workshop.
